Salman Ali Agha contemplates stepping back from T20 cricket to prioritize preparation for the 2027 World Cup.

Salman Ali Agha, the captain of Pakistan’s T20 cricket team, has expressed his intention to possibly step back from the T20 format to rejuvenate himself ahead of the ICC ODI World Cup scheduled for next year. He emphasized the importance of concentrating on the World Test Championship cycle as well.

Agha highlighted that the upcoming World Cup is a major priority and indicated that he would be willing to pause his T20 participation if it would enhance his preparation for both the World Cup and the Test series.

The ODI World Cup is set to take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia during October and November of next year.

Having served as the national T20 captain for a year, Agha’s position has come under scrutiny due to recent challenges he has faced in the format. He struggled in the World Cup, where he batted at number three without achieving significant success, and the team ultimately did not progress to the semifinals.

In contrast, Agha performed well in the recent ODI series against Bangladesh, achieving scores of 106, 64, and 5.

On the topic of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), Agha acknowledged its role as a valuable platform for discovering new talent but expressed reservations about selecting young players directly from the league for international duty. He stated, “I would prefer a system where we first identify promising young talent in the PSL, allow them to participate in domestic cricket, and then assess their performances before determining their readiness for the international stage.”

Agha pointed out that there have been numerous instances in the past where players were chosen for international matches based solely on their PSL performances, yet they failed to thrive at the highest level.
