In the wake of an alleged assault involving an Indian Army officer and his family, the Delhi Police have apprehended four additional suspects, bringing the total number of arrests to six. The incident occurred in the Vasant Enclave area of Southwest Delhi, and details have emerged regarding the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
The newly arrested individuals have been named as Surjit Singh (36), Sunil Sharma (53), Ashish (32), and Satender (35). They reportedly arrived at the scene after two of their associates—Satender alias Sonu (49) and Sanjay Sharma (56), both residents of Mehram Nagar—were involved in an altercation with the Army officer and his wife while they were consuming alcohol outside the officer’s home.
Earlier this week, the police had taken into custody Sonu, who is a director at Chaudhary Aviation Pvt Ltd, a company specializing in chartered and cargo flight services, as well as Sanjay, who operates a local restaurant known as Pandit Ji Dhaba.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (South West) Amit Goel, Surjit is acquainted with Sonu, the primary suspect. The four men who have now been arrested were gathered in Mehram Nagar when Sonu contacted them about the dispute in Vasant Enclave. They subsequently traveled to the location in a white Hyundai AURA. Upon arrival, a physical altercation ensued, and the group returned home afterward. Once aware that a legal case had been initiated, they fled but were later located and arrested by the police.
The Army officer’s wife reported that on April 11, she, her husband, and their son—a 23-year-old graduate from IIT Delhi—were subjected to harassment and physical violence by a group of men drinking near their residence. She claimed that when she confronted the individuals about their behavior, they responded with inappropriate remarks. Feeling threatened, she sought assistance from her husband and son, as well as contacted the police emergency line (112). The family also expressed frustration over the police’s delayed response and medical support during the incident.
On Monday, the DCP noted that initial investigations revealed shortcomings in the response of the Inspector in charge, resulting in the officer being reassigned to District Lines.
Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu has conveyed his grave concern regarding the incident, engaging with senior Delhi Police officials to ensure a comprehensive and prompt investigation. He has also instructed that sufficient protective measures be implemented for the Army officer and his family.
