The Madhya Pradesh High Court has recently provided significant relief to numerous contractual employees who have been working with the state government for over 16 years. The court ruled that individuals employed on a contract, outsourced, or part-time basis are entitled to the benefits of classification and associated advantages if their service duration exceeds a decade.
On April 9, Justice Vishal Dhagat approved a set of petitions submitted by these workers, emphasizing that such employees deserve “economic justice” and a reasonable standard of living.
The court’s ruling stated, “The repetitive engagement of these petitioners by the state government on a contractual basis indicates an ongoing necessity for their services. It is unjust for petitioners to receive lower wages than their counterparts and to be deprived of the essential means for a decent livelihood, economic equity, and an acceptable quality of life.”
The petitions were filed by state department workers seeking directives from the authorities to grant them the benefits of classification and the minimum pay scale as outlined in a policy enacted on October 7, 2016.
