“Lakshya Sen Honors Viktor Axelsen’s Legacy Following His Retirement from Badminton”

Viktor Axelsen, a formidable competitor for Lakshya Sen on the badminton court, received heartfelt accolades from the Indian player on the day he announced his retirement. The Danish athlete stepped away from the sport due to a chronic back injury that necessitated surgery.

In a post on his Instagram story, Sen expressed, “Badminton is fortunate to have had you, and your legacy as one of the greatest players will endure. However, what truly distinguishes you is not just your accolades, but the remarkable individual you are, a quality that transcends victories and trophies.”

Sen had the opportunity to train alongside Axelsen in Dubai in 2022 and also faced him in various prestigious tournaments, including the All England Open and the semifinals of the Paris Olympics. He reflected on this journey, stating, “Transitioning from training in Dubai to competing on grand stages like the All England Open and the Olympics has been an amazing experience. Wishing you a joyful retirement and all the best for your future endeavors.”

Throughout his illustrious career, Axelsen secured Olympic gold medals at the Tokyo 2020 Games and the 2024 Paris Olympics, in addition to a bronze medal at the Rio 2016 Games. He also claimed two World Championship titles in 2017 and 2022. His reign in men’s singles was highlighted by an impressive 100-week stint as world No. 1.

In an Instagram update, Axelsen shared that after undergoing endoscopic surgery for his back condition, he had attempted various injections and training techniques to alleviate his pain. He stated, “After exhausting all avenues to achieve a pain-free state, I have been advised to prioritize my long-term health.”

During an appearance on The Average Not Average Podcast, he opened up about his retirement, saying, “This decision isn’t mine; it’s dictated by my body. That’s the challenging aspect. It’s not that I want to retire, but I simply cannot meet the training demands. It’s difficult for me to accept that I can’t have one last opportunity to compete, but that’s how my journey has unfolded.”

In a poignant message on his Instagram, Axelsen conveyed his feelings about retirement: “Today is a challenging day for me. Due to ongoing back issues, I can no longer compete or train at the elite level. Coming to terms with this reality has been immensely tough.”

He continued, “From the moment I picked up a racket, my aspiration was to be the best in the world. I dedicated everything to this sport, which has been more than just a career for me; it has been my life. I have pursued my dreams relentlessly and achieved everything I set out to do, and even more.”
