IIT Madras Launches OmegaBall in India and Organizes Inter-College Championship

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras has officially launched OmegaBall in India, marking the sport’s debut in the nation. In conjunction with this introduction, the institute intends to establish a national-level IIT Madras OmegaBall Club to foster the sport’s growth and development.

To celebrate this launch, the Institute Gymkhana and the Office of the Dean (Students) organized an inter-college OmegaBall tournament on April 17, 2026, at the campus football field. This event saw participation from various colleges in Chennai, alongside teams from IIT Madras.

OmegaBall is a unique variant of football played by three teams on a circular pitch featuring three goalposts. Each team is tasked with attacking two goals while simultaneously defending one.

This format facilitates continuous play and encourages higher scoring. Players must adeptly balance their attacking and defensive roles, requiring constant movement and teamwork among the three competing teams.

The institute highlights that this innovative format alters traditional gameplay by introducing multiple attack and defense points, necessitating rapid decision-making and enhanced spatial awareness from players.

The inaugural tournament attracted participants from several institutions, including Loyola College of Engineering and Technology, Guru Nanak College of Arts and Science, Dr. Ambedkar Law University, The New College, Nazareth College of Arts and Science, Saveetha University, and YMCA College of Physical Education.

Matches were conducted in the three-team format, where only one team could emerge victorious, leaving the other two as losers. This structure heightens competition and demands that teams adjust their strategies in real time.

OmegaBall is already played in countries like the United States, Brazil, and certain regions in Europe, where it has been adopted as an alternative format to traditional football.

IIT Madras states that this initiative aims to enhance sports participation on campus and to introduce new formats of play. The proposed OmegaBall Club is expected to facilitate training, competitions, and the broader acceptance of the sport across India.
