Munaf Patel has issued a caution regarding Indian cricket, emphasizing the significance of Gautam Gambhir’s role as head coach. During an appearance on the TOI Sports’ YouTube show, Bombay Sport Exchange, the former Indian fast bowler expressed that if a coach of Gambhir’s caliber were to depart, managing the players would become increasingly challenging.
Patel explained that at the elite level of Indian cricket, particularly with prominent figures like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the squad, the traditional coaching role becomes less impactful. He noted that each top player often has their own trainers and support systems, making the coaching aspect secondary. “At this level, what can coaching really achieve? The art of management becomes paramount,” he stated.
He further stressed the complexities of man-management in such a competitive environment. Patel posed a rhetorical challenge, asking who could possibly prevent Kohli or Sharma from pursuing their goals: “Show me one person who can deter Virat Kohli from doing something. Show me one person who can stop Rohit Sharma.”
According to Munaf, Gambhir brings a vital and rare quality to the table: the authority to make tough decisions, including benching star players. “Everyone is aware that if anyone crosses a line, he has the resolve to drop them,” he remarked. This element of respect and accountability, Patel argues, is essential for maintaining team cohesion rather than allowing it to devolve into a group of individuals.
Moreover, he emphasized that Gambhir’s motivations extend beyond financial gain, stating that numerous IPL teams would be eager to recruit him. “He doesn’t need it,” Patel asserted, highlighting Gambhir’s genuine passion for cricket as a driving force behind his success as a coach.
With the recent string of ICC trophies following a lengthy period of near-misses, Munaf attributes much of this success to the players themselves rather than solely to Gambhir’s coaching. Nevertheless, he firmly believes in the importance of retaining Gambhir, stating, “Hold on to him for as long as you can. You will not find another person like him.”
