California Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell has declared his intention to resign from Congress amid serious allegations of sexual assault, which have led to bipartisan demands for his departure.
This decision marks a rapid decline in the political career of Swalwell, who has served seven terms in Congress and was previously viewed as a strong candidate in California’s gubernatorial race. However, he withdrew from the race following the emergence of the allegations, which he continues to contest.
In a statement shared on social media, Swalwell expressed remorse for his past decisions, stating, “I am deeply sorry to my family, staff, and constituents for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past.” He emphasized his intention to fight against what he described as serious false accusations while acknowledging the responsibility he bears for his past errors.
On Monday, the US House Ethics Committee announced the initiation of an investigation into whether Swalwell had engaged in sexual misconduct towards a subordinate employee.
Just a day prior, Swalwell suspended his gubernatorial campaign following the surfacing of the allegations, which he continues to deny.
Support from fellow Democrats quickly waned after accusations surfaced that he had sexually assaulted a woman on two occasions, including incidents that reportedly occurred during her employment with him. Reports detailing these allegations were first published by the San Francisco Chronicle and later reported by CNN as Swalwell was gaining traction in the competitive gubernatorial race.
The Ethics Committee clarified that the announcement of its investigation and the public disclosure of its review do not imply any wrongdoing on Swalwell’s part.
