Rory McIlroy credits his training at Augusta, his familiar terrain, for bolstering his Masters title defense.

Rory McIlroy has shared insights into how his extensive preparation at Augusta National, which he refers to as his “home course,” significantly contributed to his successful title defense at the Masters, following guidance from golfing legend Jack Nicklaus.

Instead of participating in PGA Tour events before the Masters, McIlroy dedicated substantial time to practicing at Augusta, even in the face of a back injury that had impacted his competitive play. Notably, he achieved a remarkable score of 29 on the front nine during a round where he played solo.

After narrowly defeating Scottie Scheffler by a single stroke, McIlroy, who has now secured six major championships, emphasized the importance of his focused preparation. “I joked last week that this place feels like my home course,” he remarked prior to departing Augusta. “I haven’t really played anywhere else in the last two or three weeks. I felt well-prepared. I know how to navigate the course and where to avoid trouble. I’m quite comfortable with all the shots around the greens.”

McIlroy noted the effectiveness of his preparation strategy, stating, “This is a solid approach. I’m not suggesting I’ll take three weeks off before every major, but arriving early at major venues to prepare and play is crucial. Playing the course seriously with one ball, aiming to score, is essential.”

Reflecting on advice from Nicklaus, McIlroy highlighted how the golfing great would simulate tournament conditions by playing a full round with one ball in the week leading up to a major. “When he arrived at the tournament, it felt natural,” McIlroy explained. “I adopted a similar approach, and I believe it’s a beneficial way to prepare for future majors.”

Fans can expect to see McIlroy at the locations of the remaining three majors in 2026: Aronimink, Shinnecock Hills, and Royal Birkdale. After the emotional experience of winning the 2025 Masters and completing the career grand slam, he feels he can transition back to competitive play more swiftly.

While Scheffler refrained from openly criticizing the organizers, he did express his surprise at the conditions on Friday afternoon, when McIlroy managed to birdie six of the last seven holes. “I’m not responsible for course setup,” Scheffler commented. “I would have preferred a more consistent firmness from Thursday to Friday. I was surprised by how soft the conditions were late on Friday afternoon.”
