UP Government Raises Wages for Noida and Ghaziabad Workers Following Significant Protests

The government of Uttar Pradesh has announced an increase in the minimum wages for workers across various sectors, following a violent protest on Monday involving numerous factory employees from multiple units within Noida’s industrial area, who were advocating for enhanced wages and improved working conditions.

The updated interim wage rates are set to be implemented retroactively from April 1, 2026, as confirmed by officials.

This decision follows a series of discussions held by a high-level committee established by the UP Labour Department, aimed at addressing the ongoing conflict between laborers and industry representatives.

The newly revised wages differ by region and skill level—unskilled, semi-skilled, and skilled—encompassing areas such as Gautam Buddh Nagar, Ghaziabad, other municipal corporation locales, and the remaining regions of the state.

In Gautam Buddh Nagar and Ghaziabad, the new monthly wages for unskilled workers will be Rs 13,690, for semi-skilled workers Rs 15,059, and for skilled workers Rs 16,868.

For other municipal corporation areas, the updated wages have been set at Rs 13,006 for unskilled workers, Rs 14,306 for semi-skilled workers, and Rs 16,025 for skilled workers.

In districts outside these areas, the interim wages are established at Rs 12,356 for unskilled workers, Rs 13,591 for semi-skilled workers, and Rs 15,224 for skilled workers, according to the official announcement.

Officials explained that this wage adjustment is aligned with the new Labour Law codes and aims to create a more equitable wage structure in light of the shifting economic landscape.

The government also addressed misinformation circulating on social media regarding a standard minimum wage of Rs 20,000 per month, declaring it to be inaccurate. “This information is misleading and not based on official notifications,” the statement clarified.

In justifying the wage increase, the government noted that industries are currently facing global economic challenges, including rising costs and demand variability, requiring a balanced approach to maintain both worker well-being and industrial stability.

The statement further mentioned that ongoing discussions with stakeholders, including employer associations and labor organizations, are taking place to gather their input before establishing a comprehensive wage structure.

The government reaffirmed its dedication to the welfare of workers, emphasizing its commitment to ensuring timely wage payments, social security benefits, and safe working environments across various industries.
