Isabella Nichols has triumphed over five-time world champion Carissa Moore, advancing to the quarterfinals at Bells Beach.
Currently, Nichols and fellow Australian Molly Picklum are the only competitors from Australia still in the running for the title.
The competition is set to resume on Friday.
Defending champion Isabella Nichols showcased her composure as she faced off against surfing legend Carissa Moore, securing her place alongside Molly Picklum as the last remaining Australians in the event at Bells Beach.
In the round held at Winkipop on Thursday, Nichols scored 16.27 points, demonstrating patience in the subdued conditions, while Moore, who is making her return to the World Surf League tour after a two-year hiatus and just recently became a mother, managed 15.07 points and initially took the lead in the heat.
Having received a bye in the first round due to the new Championship Tour structure, Nichols strategically chose her moments in a thrilling finale.
She began with a noteworthy 8.50-point ride but stumbled slightly on her second wave, earning 4.50 points, which appeared to give Moore an advantage.
However, Nichols rallied in the final moments with a strong 7.77-point score from a two-wave set. Moore responded with a 7.90-point score on her subsequent wave, but it was not enough to secure her place in the quarterfinals during her much-anticipated return to competition.
“It was intense, full throttle… You cannot afford mistakes, especially given the slow conditions,” Nichols remarked about the calm surf. “Choosing the right waves is crucial. I find it quite enjoyable, almost like a chess match.”
She expressed admiration for Moore, stating, “She’s my idol. What she’s accomplished in returning after having a baby is incredibly inspiring, and she’s surfing at an impressive level. Hats off to her.”
This round marked Nichols’s first heat in the ninth day of the competition window at Bells Beach. The event had been paused after defending champion Picklum advanced on Wednesday.
“I felt a bit uneasy, and I was relieved when the call came to halt the competition yesterday. It felt like a sign,” Nichols shared. “Adrenaline is a powerful thing; I expect to feel its effects later, but I’m ready to go from here. I know I can push my limits, so I welcome the challenge.”
In the upcoming quarterfinals, Nichols will face Caitlin Simmers, while Picklum is set to compete against Lakey Peterson for a chance to reach the semifinals.
