Could CSK elevate Ruturaj Gaikwad to the third spot? Fleming reveals, “We discuss all possibilities.”

This season, Ruturaj Gaikwad has struggled with his performance. After five matches, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain has managed only 63 runs, averaging 12.60. Despite being a reliable player for CSK in previous seasons, his approach during the powerplay at the top of the order has not aligned well with the current dynamics of the Indian Premier League (IPL). In contrast, the openers for Saturday’s match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, have set a new standard in 2024, showcasing effective strategies under the field restrictions during the initial overs.

CSK has the option to bring in Ayush Mhatre, who has provided promising performances that reflect a modern T20 style, much like his fellow player, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. This has sparked discussions about whether Mhatre should take the opening spot, allowing Gaikwad to move down to number three in the batting order. CSK’s head coach, Stephen Fleming, commented on the matter, stating, “We discuss everything regarding potential changes in batting positions. We are constantly exploring different strategies. It’s important to support our captain fully, and I believe Ruturaj will regain his form. He is too skilled a player not to make an impact in this team,” he remarked.

Throughout his career with CSK, Gaikwad has opened the batting 65 times, accumulating 2,352 runs at an impressive average of 41.26. However, when positioned at number three, his average drops significantly to 26 over eight innings, with a total of 208 runs. Interestingly, his strike rate improves when batting at three, rising from 135.8 as an opener to 151.82 in the middle order.

Gaikwad’s batting struggles have not been aided by the team’s overall performance, as they began the season with three losses before bouncing back with consecutive wins against Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders. Following the victory against KKR, Gaikwad acknowledged the mental toll his lack of form had taken on him. “It feels great to finally be on the winning side. I was definitely feeling the pressure while batting. I’m feeling positive now and focused on meeting the team’s needs. I believe a significant performance is on the horizon, and I’m confident I will deliver when required,” he told the broadcasters.

Fleming expressed satisfaction with Gaikwad’s efforts in practice, noting that extensive work is being done behind the scenes. “We are putting in a lot of effort on various fronts—team dynamics, captaincy, and individual performances. Ruturaj is progressing well. Although the results are not what he desires, he remains dedicated. This can be typical in T20 cricket. He’s training diligently and maintaining a good mindset. He just hasn’t had his breakout moment yet. However, we know from experience that he is a top-quality player,” Fleming commented.

Fleming also remarked on the unpredictable nature of the IPL, suggesting that if the team can support Gaikwad in his off days and he finds his form, it could benefit the team overall. “It’s uncommon for a player to dominate throughout the tournament. If we can manage players who are fluctuating in form and they complement each other, that’s advantageous. Ruturaj is working hard and has a solid support system in place,” he added.
