On Wednesday morning, a bomb threat email directed at several educational establishments in Chandigarh caused a significant alert throughout the city. The message asserted that explosives had been placed at various schools, the Secretariat, and even on Air India flights. Nevertheless, thorough investigations revealed no signs of danger.
The email was sent to at least three schools: St Stephen’s School in Sector 45, Saupin’s School in Sector 32-A, and Mount Carmel School in Sector 47, arriving around 7:20 AM. In addition to identifying the schools, the sender specified potential detonation times, including 1:11 PM and 2:11 PM for the schools and the Secretariat.
The communication also mentioned Air India flights, alleging that bombs had been planted on board, with suggested explosion times of 11:11 AM and 3:11 PM. The threat appeared to encompass the Chandigarh airport as well, indicating a wider scope of danger beyond the educational institutions.
The email’s content was laced with alarming and threatening rhetoric aimed at inciting fear, with references to children and public spaces that added to the gravity of the warning.
In response to the threat, Chandigarh Police mobilized swiftly, deploying bomb disposal units, canine teams, and Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs) to all affected sites. Comprehensive searches were conducted across school premises, including classrooms, hallways, playgrounds, and their surrounding environments.
Security measures were also intensified at crucial locations, such as the Secretariat and the airport, due to the broader implications of the threat outlined in the email.
Police officials indicated that all standard protocols were rigorously implemented, including controlled access and necessary evacuations to safeguard the students and staff members.
A senior police officer commented, “Every threat is considered credible until proven otherwise. Various teams conducted thorough searches at all specified locations.”
Despite the alarming nature of the email’s claims, no explosives or suspicious items were discovered during the searches.
Authorities have launched a cyber investigation to track down the sender, analyzing email headers, IP addresses, and other technical information to pinpoint the source of the message.
Chandigarh has experienced a number of similar hoax bomb threats in recent months, targeting both schools and government facilities. Each incident prompted extensive search operations that ultimately resulted in no discoveries.
Police officials have stated that such emails are typically aimed at instilling fear and disrupting daily activities, but have warned that severe legal repercussions will follow for those accountable.
