Harssh Limbachiyaa recently shared a sleep remedy on his family YouTube vlog, which is filmed by his wife, comedian Bharti Singh. In a segment filmed at 2 AM, he suggested applying two drops of ghee into each nostril to promote better sleep.
To assess the validity of this claim, we consulted a medical professional.
Dr. Aniruddha Vasant More, a neurologist at Jupiter Hospital in Thane, noted that this practice has its roots in traditional methods where a small amount of oil or ghee is applied to the nostrils to maintain moisture. He explained, “The rationale behind this is that it may alleviate dryness, ease irritation, and induce a feeling of calmness, potentially facilitating improved sleep. However, there is currently no robust scientific evidence that directly associates the use of ghee in the nostrils with enhanced sleep quality. Nonetheless, for individuals experiencing dryness or mild discomfort in the nasal passages, keeping them moist could make breathing easier during the night. Easier breathing can promote relaxation, which might indirectly contribute to better sleep.”
Dr. More emphasized the need for caution when trying this method. “The nasal passages are delicate, and applying substances such as ghee incorrectly can pose risks. There is a slight chance of aspiration, where the substance could enter the airway, particularly if an excessive amount is used. Individuals with sinus problems, allergies, or respiratory issues should refrain from attempting this without appropriate medical advice.”
He further suggested that simple lifestyle adjustments tend to be more effective. Establishing a consistent sleep schedule, minimizing screen exposure before bedtime, and ensuring a tranquil and dark sleeping environment can help the body relax naturally. “If nasal dryness is a concern, safer alternatives like saline sprays may be more advisable,” Dr. More recommended.
While traditional remedies can offer a sense of comfort, establishing consistent habits and employing safe, scientifically-supported practices is the most effective approach to enhancing sleep quality, rather than relying solely on home remedies.
