Newcomer nets goal as Matildas launch FIFA Series with a commanding victory

The Matildas secured a decisive 5-0 victory against Malawi in their opening match of the FIFA Series held in Kenya.

Competing against the world’s 153rd-ranked team at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, the Australian side saw experienced players Sam Kerr and Emily van Egmond score in the first half. This was followed by goals from Alex Chidiac, Holly McNamara, and newcomer Leticia McKenna, who capped off the scoring.

Chidiac, part of the Asian Cup squad but without any playing time during the tournament, was awarded the player of the match title.

Captain Kerr was substituted at halftime for Remy Siemsen as coach Joe Montemurro introduced several fresh talents alongside the Asian Cup finalists.

McKenna, the latest addition to the squad, made an impressive start to her international career by scoring in stoppage time. Hayley Raso intercepted a misplaced pass from Malawi in midfield and delivered a precise through ball to McKenna.

Although McNamara was advancing alongside her, McKenna chose to strike the ball low into the left corner, celebrating her goal with her teammates.

The match began positively for the Australians when van Egmond, the most capped player in Matildas history, capitalized on a quickly taken free-kick that caught the defense off guard, scoring her 33rd international goal with a well-placed shot past defender Madise Chimwemwe.

Kerr extended the lead to 2-0 in the 41st minute after the Malawian goalkeeper, Mercy Sikelo, failed to handle a cross from Caitlin Foord, allowing Kerr to find the net. She almost added another goal just before halftime, but it was disallowed for offside.

As the game approached the hour mark, Montemurro made adjustments, leading to Chidiac ending a three-year wait for an international goal before substituting her for McNamara. The latter converted a low cross from fellow substitute Jamilla Rankin as the match neared its conclusion.

McKenna’s goal sealed a triumphant day for Australia, and the players took time afterward to engage with fans by signing autographs.

The Matildas are set to face the host nation, Kenya, next, with the match scheduled to commence at 12:30 am AEST on Thursday.
