Dominik Szoboszlai, widely regarded as Liverpool’s standout player this season, issued an apology to fans on Monday, addressing what he termed a “misunderstanding.” The midfielder has been exceptional throughout a challenging campaign for Liverpool, netting 12 goals, including remarkable efforts against Arsenal and Manchester City.
However, following a 4-0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup earlier this month, Szoboszlai’s response—shrugging, raising his arms, and applauding the away supporters—was perceived by some as sarcastic after footage circulated on social media.
Teammate Federico Chiesa had to guide him away as discontent erupted among the traveling fans at the Etihad Stadium.
As Liverpool prepares for the second leg of their Champions League quarterfinal against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday, Szoboszlai sought to clarify his actions. “Perhaps there was a misunderstanding between me and the fans,” he expressed. “I didn’t intend to convey anything negative. I fully understand the significance of the fans to this club and vice versa.”
He continued, “We strive for the fans just as they support us. If my actions were misinterpreted, I sincerely apologize. I do not consider myself above them; I share their feelings. We are in this together, and I hope they stand by us as well.” Liverpool is currently behind 2-0 after the first leg in Paris and is aiming for a remarkable comeback against the reigning European champions.
In the semifinal stage of 2019, Liverpool achieved a stunning 4-0 victory against Barcelona at Anfield after losing the first leg 3-0.
To replicate such a feat against PSG, who had a commanding performance in the initial match last week, will require something extraordinary. “We believe we can accomplish something special tomorrow, but it will take an exceptional effort to do so, as we are up against the champions of Europe,” stated manager Arne Slot. “We are aware that a remarkable performance is essential for us to advance to the next stage.”
