California Congressman Eric Swalwell announced via a post on X on Monday that he intends to step down from his position in Congress following allegations of sexual assault against him.
This decision came just one day after Swalwell halted his campaign for the governorship of California. Earlier on the same day, the House Ethics Committee revealed that it had initiated an investigation into the claims made against him.
In his statement, Swalwell expressed regret to his family, staff, and constituents for past errors in judgment. He stated, “I will vigorously contest the serious and unfounded allegations made against me. Nonetheless, I must accept responsibility for the mistakes I have committed.”
Swalwell also acknowledged the potential for a swift expulsion vote against him and other members of Congress, stating, “It is unjust to expel anyone from Congress without due process, especially within days of an allegation being made. However, I recognize that it is also inappropriate for my constituents to have me distracted from my responsibilities. Therefore, I have decided to resign from my congressional seat.”
This situation is still evolving, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
