NFL journalist Dianna Russini has stepped down from her position at The Athletic, merely days after images surfaced showing her with New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel at a resort. The images, which both individuals claim are misleading, depict them embracing, holding hands, and relaxing by a swimming pool.
Russini’s resignation follows the publication of these photos by the New York Post, which stated they were captured at a hotel in Sedona, Arizona, just prior to the NFL owners meetings that commenced on March 29 in Phoenix.
In a letter addressed to The Athletic’s executive editor Steven Ginsberg, which was later shared with the Associated Press, Russini expressed her commitment to professionalism in her journalism career. She stated, “I have always approached NFL coverage with integrity and dedication, and I stand by all my published work.” She acknowledged that The Athletic had initially supported her after the photos emerged, expressing confidence in her abilities and pride in her journalism, for which she was appreciative.
Unfortunately, she noted, the situation escalated as various media outlets engaged in unfounded speculation detached from the actual facts. Russini voiced her concern regarding the media frenzy that was occurring, stating, “This narrative has progressed without respect for the internal review process that The Athletic is trying to carry out, and I have no desire to participate in a public inquiry that has already inflicted significant harm.” Ultimately, she decided to resign before her contract expired on June 30, explaining that she did not want to contribute further to the narrative being formed around the situation.
Having joined The Athletic in 2023 after nearly ten years at ESPN in various roles, including SportsCenter anchor and NFL analyst, Russini also hosted a podcast and participated in video content for The Athletic.
Following the release of the photos, both Vrabel and Russini—who are married to other individuals—issued statements to the Post that attempted to clarify the context. Russini noted that the photos did not accurately reflect the nature of their gathering, which included a group of six people. Vrabel characterized their interactions as completely innocent, dismissing any alternative interpretations as absurd.
Vrabel did not participate in the Patriots’ pre-draft press conference on Monday. The New York Times reported that The Athletic was conducting an investigation into Russini’s actions, a decision that came after Ginsberg had previously remarked that the published images “lacked essential context” while praising her contributions to the organization.
As Vrabel prepares for his second season as the head coach of the Patriots, he is coming off a successful campaign in which he led the team to a 14-3 record, culminating in a Super Bowl appearance where they faced defeat against Seattle. Notably, he was awarded the AP NFL Coach of the Year title last season and previously earned the same honor while coaching the Tennessee Titans in 2021.
