Discussions surrounding Alex Twal have often focused on his perceived shortcomings rather than his contributions to the game. The Wests Tigers forward has consistently demonstrated reliability and strength since his NRL debut in 2017, effectively making tackles and advancing the ball with minimal fuss.

Twal’s playing style has always been straightforward. When he did attract attention, it was typically due to his prolonged absence from the try-scoring sheet, which became a lighthearted topic among fans and media alike. Social media memes proliferated, and betting companies even capitalized on his scoring drought, turning him into a fan favorite. Remarkably, Twal maintained a sense of humor throughout this period, which became a testament to his character.

Now, almost three years after he finally crossed the try line in his 116th NRL match in 2023, Twal has evolved into a seasoned player and is the longest-serving member of the Tigers. He has also secured a spot among the club’s top ten players for all-time appearances. Against the odds, this 29-year-old athlete has undergone a remarkable transformation, showcasing his best performances to date as part of the Tigers’ impressive start to the season.

In the first six weeks, Twal has played at an exceptional level, achieving career highs in various metrics, including runs, run metres, tackle busts, offloads, and tackles. His performance has been comparable to the best locks in the league. While he continues to execute his traditional responsibilities, the magnitude of his improvement is striking—his average run metres have surged from 81 two years ago to 120 this season.

Beyond simply enhancing his existing skills, Twal has added new dimensions to his game. During a match against Newcastle at Campbelltown, he received a standing ovation from the crowd as he exited the field late in the game, only to quickly return to finish his duties. He logged 77 minutes on the field, accumulating 19 runs for 182 metres, marking his highest total for a game at lock, alongside three tackle busts and 42 tackles, with only one missed.

Demonstrating his newfound finesse, he also recorded two offloads and eight passes that opened space for his teammates, contributing to the Tigers’ emergence as a formidable force in the NRL.

Although Twal has yet to score again, this fact has become irrelevant; the conversation has shifted away from what he lacks to a recognition of his substantial contributions. He exemplifies the idea that it’s never too late to evolve and improve.

This transformation began last year and has flourished this season, largely attributed to the influence of current coach and former teammate Benji Marshall. Twal expressed gratitude for Marshall’s belief in him, saying, “Benji’s put a lot of belief in me, and I’m the type of player who just wants to repay that belief and trust.”

Reflecting on their time together, Twal noted how Marshall’s past support as a teammate has now translated into effective coaching. “You have a coach who puts belief in you, and I knew if I put my head down, worked hard, and ticked my boxes, I could build my game,” he shared.

Twal believes there is still room for improvement in his performance. His game has become more sophisticated this season, moving beyond the basics of running harder and tackling well. In just six games, he has recorded 12 offloads, matching the total from 72 games between 2019 and 2022. His creative passing ability has also shone through, as demonstrated by a back-handed flick pass that set up a line break for teammate Jahream Bula, a play that would have impressed Marshall himself.

While the impact of his passing may be difficult to quantify, its significance is evident in the Tigers’ gameplay this season. Twal’s evolution from a prop to a true lock forward is the result of relentless dedication, as he believes that hard work will yield positive outcomes.

“I’ll keep trying to lead the boys the best way I can—working hard and setting an example in training, then doing my best during games,” Twal stated.

The achievements of Twal and the Tigers are the result of long-awaited perseverance. Prior to Sunday’s match, he was the only player on the squad to have won three consecutive games, having witnessed many false starts throughout his career.

However, this season marks a shift for both Twal and the Tigers, who find themselves sharing the competition lead a mere six weeks in. A victory against the injury-depleted Brisbane on Saturday at Campbelltown would secure the Tigers their fourth consecutive win, a feat they haven’t accomplished since 2012. As aspirations for their first finals appearance in 15 years grow more tangible, the team seems to be on the right path.

Having often been viewed as the perennial underdogs of the NRL, it appears they may finally be on the verge of success, and Twal is eager to contribute to that journey. Now regarded as a hero, he acknowledges the unwavering support of Tigers fans throughout the challenging times. “Tigers fans have always been good to me, even during the dark days, even when we didn’t get the results,” Twal expressed. “I appreciate them so much. I’ve been at this club my whole life, and I look forward to continuing to build on our performances, securing more wins, and enjoying good times.”
